In Vivo Experimentation in Software Engineering

For more than 10 years the empirical software engineering discipline discusses about the generalization from empirical studies conducted in University settings with students (in vitro). On the one hand, the students are available anyway, the studies provide lots opportunities of control and are reasonable cheap to conduct. On the other hand, if they could chose, most people would prefer studies conducted in real life (in vivo). In vivo (Latin for "within the living") would mean with real software engineers, within a real project context, real size,...

However, in vivo studies are rarely published (or perhaps even less conducted)!

What are the reasons? Building on a common experience in empirical software engineering of more than forty years, the presenters will talk about all aspects that have to be taken into account in all steps of in vivo studies.

Learning Objectives:

The goal of the International Advanced School on Empirical Software Engineering (IASESE) is to provide attendees with the opportunity to learn and practice advanced empirical software engineering techniques from leaders in the empirical software engineering community. The course is aimed at researchers and practitioners interested in deepening their knowledge and skills in applying empirical methods in real life investigating various aspects of software development. IASESE2014 will motivate the use of empirical methods in real life, present currently applied methods and practices, and discuss lessons learned from conducting studies in real life and their consequences. The structure will be as follows:

  • Introduction empirical studies under real-life conditions
  • Experimentation in real life
  • Case studies in industry
  • Mixed methods
  • Conclusions

Who Should Attend?

Anyone interested in software engineering, process improvement, and experimentation in real life.

What Will Participants Take Away?

Participants in this year's school will learn about the state of the practice in in-vivo experimentation related to different aspects of software development.
